The Plugged
When the ball is down — and when your game is too
The name isn’t decoration. Embedded lies, recovery shots, and hard-pan humility are part of golf. This section covers the rulebook moments and the practical ones.
Embedded ball basics
In the general area, a ball embedded in its own pitch mark is typically entitled to free relief. Mark, lift, clean, and drop in the relief area. Don’t invent extra drops because the lie “feels unfair.”
If you’re unsure whether it’s truly embedded, take a photo, get agreement when possible, and play a second ball under the rules if needed in competition.
Recovery technique notes
- Plugged in rough: Steepen a touch, accept a lower flight, and prioritize getting back in play.
- Fried egg in bunker: Square face, more sand, less “splash aesthetic.”
- Mud ball: Expect curve. Aim for the fat part of the green and club up.
Gear that helps when you’re plugged
Wedge grind and bounce matter more than a new driver head in recovery season. A versatile sand wedge and a ball you can spin from imperfect lies will save more cards than another 4 yards online.
